Spray Defects
|
Defect Description |
Cause |
| Sags, Runs, Lace Curtains | Viscosity: to thin, solvent balance, paint temperature when reduced. |
| Fluid Delivery: excessive, imbalance to atomization pressure. | |
| Technique: gun distance, excessive pattern overlap, distorted spray pattern, gun speed too slow. | |
| Environment: booth temperature variations, flash temperature too cool | |
| Substrate: too cool, pre-treatment, surface tension. | |
| Dry Spray- Sandy appearance, coarse texture, lacks or, varying gloss. | Viscosity: too heavy, solvent balance too fast, paint temperature when reduced. |
| Fluid Delivery: inadequate, imbalance to air pressure. | |
| Technique: gun distance, dry overspray (see viscosity), gun speed, arcing. | |
| Environment: booth temperature too high for solvent balance, flash temperature too high. | |
| Substrate: too hot or warm when sprayed, pre-treatment temperature too high, insufficient cool down after pre-treatment. | |
| Orange Peel - Texture appearance, noticeable hill and valleys, poor depth of image. | Viscosity: too heavy, solvent balance too fast. |
| Fluid Delivery: excessive, imbalance to atomization pressure. | |
| Technique: gun distance too close, gun speed, arcing. | |
| Environment: booth temperature too high, flash temperature too high. | |
| Substrate: too hot or warm when sprayed, pre-treat wash temperature too high. | |
| Solvent Popping - Minute breaks in finish generally in clusters, can also be general in nature. | Solvent Balance: too fast to allow vehicle solvents to evaporate. |
| Film Build: too heavy. | |
| Technique: gun distance, speed. | |
| Environment: too cool. | |
| Flash Off: too close. | |
| Oven: too hot, lacks zoning. | |
| Dirt - Determine what kind, fiber, etc. | Operator: clothing, hair net, other personnel. |
| Environment: booth confines, traffic air make up filters, compressed air (air filter media), areas adjacent to booth, sanding blow-off, etc. | |
| Paint: lack of or inadequate straining, dirty circulating lines, hose or pressure tanks, paint age, excessive storage temperatures, incombustibility to solvents. | |
| Flash and Bake Oven: cleanliness, loose dampers. | |
| Mottling - as with metallics. Variations in color, light and dark streaking. | Viscosity: solvent balance too slow. |
| Fluid Delivery: excessive, imbalance to air pressure. | |
| Technique: gun distance too close, gun speed too slow, too much overlap. | |
| Environment: too cool (see solvent balance). | |
| Substrate: too cool (see solvent balance). | |
| Others | |
| Fish Eyes | Air borne oils, silicones, deodorants. |
| Blushing | Humidity (lacquers only) dew point. |
| Trapped Air | Micro foaming, agitation viscosity, surface tension of paint. |
| Crazing | Excessive film, oven temperatures. |
| Water Spots | Pre-treat drying temperature, compressed air contaminants. |
